Red Light Therapy

Stimulate the Retina with Red Light

What is Red Light Therapy?

Repeated low-level red-light therapy (RLRL) is a novel, non-invasive treatment designed to slow the progression of myopia.

An effective treatment option recommended by our doctors for fast myopia progression cases, high myopia, and patients with inadequate response to conventional myopia treatments.

How Does RLRL Work?

RLRL delivers low-level red-light therapy to the back of the eye, stimulating blood flow at the back of the eye and thickening the outer layer of the eye known as the choroid. It has been found to significantly slow the elongation of the eye that causes myopia. Furthermore, it has even been found to not only slow elongation but shorten the eye in around 20% of patients, which can result in a patient’s prescription reverting to a lower degree.

Studies of RLRL so far have shown that RLRL is comparable or even superior to the results published for conventional myopia control treatments such as atropine, orthokeratology or contact lenses.

RLRL Efficiency

  • Children can expect a 70-85% reduction in their myopia progression as long as they are complaint with treatment (more than 75% compliant)
  • About 20% of children can also expect a regression of their myopia prescription with an even higher likelihood in children with high myopia (-5.00D and above)

Effective Option As Dual Therapy

RLRL is also available as an adjunct therapy, where it can be added onto other myopia treatments if your child continues to demonstrate myopia progression, showing stronger therapeutic effects than stand alone OrthoK, MiSight, and MiYOSMART glasses.

However, RLRL cannot be combined with atropine eye drops as atropine causes the pupil of the eye to widen, which may affect the amount of light intensity entering the eye. Patients on Atropine are advised by our optometrists to stop for a period of time before switching to RLRL to allow the effects of the drops to wear off for safe use.

Who Can Use RLRL?

Research studies for RLRL have been conducted on children from the ages of 3 to 16 which is the age range most myopia studies include. Our clinic currently has patients ranging from young children to adults using the treatment. Treatment is recommended to be continued until the risk of further progression is low. Patients above 16 years of age may be able to use RLRL as an off-label treatment.

There is no minimum prescription to use RLRL. RLRL therapy is also shown to provide greater effects towards patients with prescriptions of -5.00 or more (high myopia).

How To Use RLRL

Commencing with RLRL at our clinic usually follows your last appointment with our optometrists where additional scans are completed to have baseline measurements and to check the health of the eye before treatment.

We are partnered with Eyerising to provide treatment to our patients. Our clinic checks the measurements, scans, and ongoing management of RLRL whilst Eyerising provides access to treatment, tech support, payments, and machine queries.

After a delivery session you are able to take your machine home and begin treatment.

Using the Machine

3 minutes per session
2 times a day
5 days a week

10 sessions of treatment are available each week. It is highly recommended that you complete ALL 10 sessions a week to fully maximise treatment. Treatment sessions are 3 minutes long. We strongly recommend creating a routine to maintain compliance, such as morning and night every weekday, where weekends can then become catch-up days.

You do not have to complete the treatment session at the same time every day - as long as you are reaching all 10 sessions a week you are receiving the recommended amount of treatment. Multiple sessions can also be completed in a day as long as there is 4 hours in between.

Eyerising RLRL machines have many safety mechanisms in place to make sure safe use of the machine is upheld. You will NOT be able to complete more than the recommended 10 sessions, as well as not being able to do consecutive treatment sessions until there is 4h in between.

To use the machine simply adjust the heights to your suitability, turn on the machine, and stare into the red light for the 3 minute session. You do not have to strain and hold your eyes open - blinking is completely fine. Wearing soft contact lenses while using the machine is not recommended by Eyerising. Do not wear glasses or OrthoK lenses either.

Our Clinic's Experience

We currently have around 50 patients actively enrolled with RLRL treatments. The vast majority of these patients have had exceptional results in slowing of their myopia progression, and in some cases even slight shortening of their eye length after starting RLRL. Response to RLRL can be seen as early as one month. Our patients range from young children to adults.
Our Optometrists have frequently partnered with Eyerising to discuss our patients experience at our clinic and their professional experience with the treatment. Educational video webinars by our optometrists can be found here:
