Cataracts

A cataract is an opacity or yellowing of the eye's natural crystalline lens. Most often occurring with age, cataracts usually develop slowly, gradually making vision more blurry, like looking through a foggy window.

Most people will develop cataracts in their lifetime. Occasionally, cataracts can be present at birth or occur earlier than usual as a result of trauma to the eye. Diabetes, UV exposure and the use of certain medications are known to accelerate the development of cataracts.

Our optometrists can detect and assess cataracts. Using our anterior eye camera we can take images of your cataracts and monitor for changes over time. We also assess your vision and prescription for changes and will advise you when the appropriate time comes for further intervention.

Treatment of cataracts is with surgery; the eye's natural lens is replaced with an artificial clear lens. Cataract surgery is a day procedure performed by an ophthalmologist in theatre. We can refer you to a private ophthalmologist or to a public hospital where you will be added to a waiting list. If you have private health insurance with hospital cover we recommend choosing a private surgeon for the operation.
